Festival of Christmas Trees 2025

On Sunday 23rd November, in St.Michael's Parish Church in Linlithgow, at 3pm, a concert by the Lathallan Trio: Lesley Bell, clarinet, Alison Hastie, viola, and Alan Hastie, piano. The combination of clarinet, viola and piano was first used by Mozart in his Kegelstatt Trio K498. The 3 protagonists are evenly matched, blending in elegant conversation. It's probably not true that Mozart composed the Trio whilst bowling (Kegelstatt means a skittle alley), but the publisher's nickname has stuck! Schumann uses the same line-up in his Trio Op 132 Märchenerzählungen (Fairy Tales): a suite of 4 picturesque miniatures, composed for his friends in a rush of inspiration in October 1853, and are his last published works. The fairy tales are not specified, but make a charming suite. Centrepiece of the concert is Rebecca Clarke's Duo for Clarinet and Viola, weaving ethereal and haunting sounds from this unusual combination. Composed while she was visiting America in 1941 and unable to return home because war had broken out, it is in austere mood, quite different to her earlier lush style.
We hope you can come and enjoy this free concert - all donations go to the organ fund at St.Michael's.

Come along for a fun quiz night, on your own or with a team. Please register on Eventbrite, in case we run out of space!
