Music for Today
Today's organ music is from the "Church Sonatas" by Mozart(1756-91). These were originally composed for organ and small string orchestra, and were probably called "Church Sonatas" because that was where the organ was. It seems unlikely that they formed an integral part of a service in the same way as the movements from his "Requiem", for example.
Notes on Today’s Scripture
Exodus 32: 1-14, Moses pleads for Israel, the LORD ‘changes his mind’ and relents
During Moses’ absence on Mt Sinai, the people of Israel rebel, choosing Aaron as their leader, saying, ‘Come, make gods for us.’ Aaron makes a golden calf from their jewellery and builds an altar before it, offering sacrifices to this ‘god.’ Moreover, he declares that this is the god that brought the people out of Egypt. The people eat, drink and run wild. Already Israel has broken the first two of the Ten Commandments, so recently given. While the people party, the LORD puts it to Moses that he should destroy them and make of Moses a great nation. Moses pleads for the people, showing himself to be a shrewd negotiator, committed to his people. The LORD ‘changes his mind,’ turns from his anger and does not bring disaster on his people. Israel has broken the covenant with the LORD, however, and Moses, in his own anger, is soon to break the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments are written. The consequences are dire, and Israel will have to atone for its sin. God suffers with Israel in bondage in Egypt, and suffers Israel when it rebels at Sinai. But what is broken must be mended, at a high cost.
