Weddings

Marriage is a big step on a lifelong journey that offers joy and challenges in equal measure. For this reason many people still choose to be married in the traditional way, in church with the blessing of God, family and friends. Brides and grooms have been coming to St Michael’s to be married for over 760 years. Your own family may have been part of that tradition for generations, or your connection with St Michael’s may be a more recent one. We welcome your interest and answer some of the frequently asked questions below.

Do I need to be a member of St Michael's to be married there ? You do not need to be members of St Michael’s to be married here. We do, of course, invite you to view St Michael’s as your church home, and you will be offered the opportunity to attend Enquirers’ classes, where you can learn about church membership.

Do I need to attend church regularly ? We encourage you to view St Michael’s as your church, or spiritual home and invite you to worship with us as often as you can.  You will be given the opportunity to "connect" with a couple who can help make you feel welcome at St Michael's, and, if you wish, sit with you at church and introduce you to other members of the church family. You will be offered this service through a connect invitation card and letter and contacted soon after.

What will the minister ask me when I see him/her ? Why marriage? Why a church wedding? What led you to St Michael’s? The wedding ceremony at St Michael’s is a very traditional Christian service, how do you feel about this? Are you able to participate in the Marriage Preparation class?

How far in advance do I need to book the church ? As soon as possible after your engagement and after you have satisfied the legal requirements of the Registrar's office.

Are there any fees for cancelling ? There are no fees for cancelling by either the Church or the wedding couple. However, in the event of a cancellation, you should inform the Church Office as soon as practicable.

Can I have my own music?  You may choose music and discuss it with the organist. He will then advise you if it is suitable for a wedding service.

How do I make the booking?   Please phone the church office to make an appointment to meet the minister. You will be given an application form to take away and complete. You should return it to the church office as soon as possible. Currently, no deposit is required. A letter of confirmation will be sent to you.

Can I take photographs in the Palace ? You can make a request to Historic Scotland to take photographs in the Palcae and grounds. Please note they will charge a fee for this.

How much does it cost?  There is no fee for the services of a minister to officiate at a wedding. However, the Kirk Session is entitled to make a charge towards the running costs of the church.  Payment is inclusive of use of the church for up to 2 hours, the services of the organist, permission to take photographs and church flowers.  The bellringer can be requested if you wish at an additional cost and a video taken by your professional photographer will incur a permission charge.  We do not require a deposit, but payment should be made in full at least six weeks before the date of the wedding.  For full details of our costs, availability or to request a wedding booklet, please contact the church office.
